French Salad Dressing

Really simple and easy French salad dressing made from ingredients you always have on hand.  It is a basic recipe that is worth adding to your recipe box to have on hand. The salad dressing is bold in flavor and is a cross between bottled French dressing and Catalina dressing. It will turn a simple green salad into something amazing.  The recipe makes the bottled dressing seem bland and lacking in richness of flavor.  It is very thick and creamy and clings to the salad leaves so it don’t pool on the bottom of the salad bowl.

The recipe is from the first half of the 20th century and many cooks had their own version of this dressing.  We have gotten away from making our own salad dressings because it is so easy to just buy it.  But if your food budget is not reaching as far as it needs to be then making dressings for salad can save you money without a lot of work at meal times. With this dressing you just throw in all the ingredients into a blender or use an electric mixer to blend.  The extra dressing can be stored for several weeks in the refrigerator.  Just pour into a jar that has a tight lid.  When ready to use just give the jar a good shake.  I save a few jars for this purpose which also is cost saving.

This is a great recipe when you are out of ideas and money.

Creamy French Salad Dressing

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup catsup
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon of paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 cup oil

Directions:

In a blender or mixer combine the first 6 ingredients.  Mix until blended. Slowly add the oil in a thin steady stream while mixing.  The mixture will thicken while mixing. Give it a 30 second mix after all the oil is added.  Serve and pour remaining dressing into a jar with a tight lid to store in the refrigerator until used. Makes about 1 1/2 cup.

I have never been a fan of French dressing until I tried this recipe. I had only had commercial bottled French dressing and this is so much better. Thanks for stopping in.

  1. My husband puts celery seed in everything! Is the title the right title for this recipe? Where is the celery seed? Did you mean to put French Salad Dressing? Either way, it looks really delicious!

Just throw some celery seed in it for hubby when you make it. I could of called it Red Russian dressing but that is not politically correct right now. I never could tell the difference between Red Russian and Catalina dressing. A French dressing is a technique used to slowly add the oil while beating to make it creamy. It needs a binder such as mustard, catsup or egg yoke to hold it together with air to make it creamy and thick. The catsup binder was probably the most often used at home and the commercial industry after WWII called it French as one of the early bottled dressings.

Heirloom recipes are always rather fun. Thanks for visiting.

There is plenty of punch in the flavor to go with the color. It is so easy to make in just a couple of minutes. It takes longer to wash the blender then it takes to make it.
