About

I am retired and living in Florida.  I enjoy my grandkids because they are always under foot.  I started cooking as a child because my mother worked outside of the home.  Also I enjoy fiber and needle arts.

I started writing this blog here in September 2010.  I came here with a group of bloggers after a reader blog was closed on a political opinion news site a year earlier.  I still occasionally write something on that group blog.  Like me several chose to utilize the option of having an individual blog.

Most of the early posts were political opinion pieces that I have since deleted because they were written here to cross post on an outside blog,  I found the draft feature here easier at the time to use and the picture hosting here could be linked from outside of WordPress at time. But I fell in love with all the food bloggers that were here during that time.  I would try their recipes and then reblog them here or link them here.  Only those links and reblogs no longer existed because the blogs had closed.  So now my first 2 years is blank.  I did write some of my own recipes but my photos were bad because of the digital camera I had. I finally caught on how to take advantage of all the tools and had a better camera in May of 2012.

Since then I have been adding recipes here and have gotten better at doing this.  I have met many people in this journey.  There just a few that was here when I got started are still here.  Some moved to their own domain others just stopped.  I have since learned not to link to other recipes but to rewrite them, incase the link stops working. Being able to do this has been work but also a pleasure.

Food writing is very time consuming and difficult because the recipes have to be made and tested.  I only post a recipe if I am sure it can be easily recreated by my readers. The standard I have is high and sometimes it takes me several tries to get the recipe just right. Keeping the dishes simple and inexpensive is my other goal.  It is not very cutting edged or gourmet when writing for an audience that has a limited income to spend.

I try to do this without sounding like a prepper. I base many of the recipes on what is being distributed by my local food bank.  Being a client at the food bank I have met so many that don’t have the cooking skills it takes or recipe ideas on how to use what is available to them.  Many are also elderly women living alone who have outlived their husbands and savings.  It is a challenge but a goal that keeps me interested in writing this blog.  Having a limited resources also keeps me from a regular routine of weekly offerings.  I post when I can with something new.  It all depends on what I have to work with.

I hope you enjoy my site which is a current work in progress because WordPress keeps updating to stay in line with current technologies.

  7. Hi, I really enjoy reading your blog and have nominated you for the “Inspiring Blog Award” There are a few rules to this nomination (these aren’t my rules, so do what you want…no pressure) you need to give a shout out to me, of course, tell us 7 things about yourself and then nominate 15 bloggers, that’s the tricky part, if you don’t have 15, don’t worry, just pass it on to someone….share the joy by following this link, http://thepinkgourmet.wordpress.com/2012/08/15/thank-you/….. Well done!!!

I know you follow me on here but I am moving my page to my own self hosted site. I’d love to keep in contact and stuff. I will still be doing the same things over here but with a little bit more freedom. I’m gonna still post crafts, articles on health, disabilities and recipes. Now, I am starting on that blog to write book reviews and product reviews. I’d really like to see ya over there sometime. My new blog is at http://www.disabilitywho.org.
    Happy blogging!

Food Blogging is one of the most time consuming blog that there is. I always admire the cooks who stick with this everyday with their cooking. photographing, writing and communicating with their readers.

I have been doing a quilt a long on the Daily Kos Blog for a group of quilters there. One of the ladies is really into the sampler quilt and wants to learn to machine quilt with her machine at home. You have a wonderful picture with your quilt rolled up on your table. I thought she should see your blog. I have been posting the blocks on my food blog so they have a quick way of finding the patterns because Kos is so large and blogs fad away in their system. I am surprised at all the interest. Thanks you for your comment.

Hi – So glad to find your blog although it started out as a “google” for my favorite commercial salad dressing: Old Dutch. Since I understand from local grocers and by searching the internet that this dressing has been discontinued, thought you would want to know that Old Dutch followers are REALLY happy to find your homemade version. I have used Old Dutch for years and a salad dressing, with local grown tomatoes this time of year, and as a marinade. I am about to try your recipe and will report back. SO HAPPY!

I don’t think being middle class prepared some for what is happening now. One of the things I see the most is, they turn down produce that is less than perfect or at the end of its shelf life. There is still plenty that can be salvaged by just washing and removing the bad. It doesn’t occur to them to spend a hour cleaning the vegetables and freezing what can be frozen to use in a few days. And eat what can’t be frozen first like a big supper salad. It is a long learning curve for them.

      Thanks for stopping in.

WordPress I think is having some issues. Two regular bloggers ended in my spam last month that comment often. So I have been checking my spam everyday. They must of added some new words or phrases to the spam bot dictionary. Thank you for letting me know. I will go and check that post. I have never turned of any comment sections. I don’t even know how. This happened to me also the other day when I went to post on someone’s older post. I just posted to the last post they made and referred back to the older post.

I try really hard to find good recipes and test them to make sure they are going to work for others. I was a lab tech many moons ago and if another lab could not reproduce your results then your work was junk. I just want people to be happy with the recipe. Thanks for taking time to let me know you liked it. You made my day.
