Cream of Something Soup Base (DIY)

This is a simple mix that you can keep in your cupboard to use in cooking. It is something that can be made when the food budget is small. I received this month dry milk in my food pantry box. This gave me the opportunity to share this DIY and make some more to use. When I run out I miss it because it is so nice to have on hand and it does help with menu planning.

You will have to buy powered milk and powered butter milk. Powdered milk usually comes in 1 cup packets. This is a long term item that you will use over many months and the savings of not buying canned soups out weight the initial cost. The powered butter milk is nice to keep on hand in the refrigerator to use in recipes that calls for butter milk. The powder is mixed in water to make butter milk.

I have a dehydrator that I bought marked down because it was damaged. A piece of tape fixed it. You can find them in thrift stores also at a low cost, just look around on line and locally. It has become a valuable tool in my kitchen. I use it often for things like bread crumbs and drying spices. The mushrooms and celery used in these recipes I have dehydrated myself at low cost.

You can use this in any recipe that calls for a can of cream soup. Chicken and mushroom is used the most often. Also this is a great mix to have if you only cook for one or two people. This makes it easy to cut recipes down for casseroles so you don’t have to make more then you can eat. I have given instructions on making 1/4 cup of creamed soup. You can multiply it to as many cups you need. I like to use it for a gravy base also.

Celery soup is one that I don’t use as often so I have given a recipe that is half of the amount of the other two. This is also will help you to make smaller batches of the other soups to try.

I hope my pantry tips will shorten that learning curve for others. These are also kitchen skills that are nice to know and equipment to pick up when thrift shopping. Don’t wait until it is necessary.

  1. Thanks for posting this! I’m totally gluten free, Celiac, so I make the majority of my stuff totally from scratch. I’d lost my recipes for these soup bases. With winter coming, I love having them on hand.

You are more then welcome. I have the onion soup mix recipe also. I can post that if you need it. I have found that having these on hand is cheaper then buying canned soups. I also like knowing what is in it.

      1. I’d love that. Thank you so much! It is so much cheaper. The initial time spent is worth the money saved and time saved in the long run. I’ll have to look for a dehydrator. I didn’t think about thrift stores/yard sales. I’ve always wanted one. You have a great blog!!!

You are welcome. I have been having trouble finding vegetable bullion. I did finally find it in the cubes so I will have to use the blender or food processor. It used to be easy to find but it must of not sold as well.

      1. I buy instant bouillon here at Walmart. It’s in a brown plastic jar. I can’t remember for sure, but I think it’s with the dried soup mixes.

I get Chicken and Beef from Walmart. They used to carry the granulated vegetable bullion. The cubes are working only I have to use the food processor to make the soup mix. Thanks for the feed back.

  3. thank you, I know a lot of people are adverse to canned cream soups and it’s nice to give them an option. I must get some buttermilk powder to keep on hand, does it really take the place of real buttermilk in a salad dressing for instance?

I know you can use it to make powdered ranch dressing mix with it. I have done that several times. I bake with the powder when a recipe calls for buttermilk. You have to keep the powder in the refrigerator after it is open.
