Simple Sweet and Salty Snack Mix

Simple easy sauce to pour over your choice of cereal, snacks, nuts and crackers that is baked in a slow oven  . The choice of what you want in the mix is  what you like or have on hand.  The sauce is made from sugar, butter, vegetable oil, soy sauce, garlic powder and salt. After it has cooled you can add candy and dried fruit if you want.

This recipe was given to me by a friend that showed me the pan she used and how far she filled it with the cereal mix.  I had a turkey roasting pan about the same size as hers so I just eye ball the amount of mix.  She said that was the way she was given the recipe.  I had to measure the amount of mix in cups that half way fills my blue porcelain roaster pan.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 3/4 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
  • 3 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 3 tablespoons dark soy sauce
  • 10-12 cups of various cereals, pretzels, crackers and nuts.

Directions:

Preheat oven 275 degrees.

Baked in a large roasting pan. Place cereal mix, pretzels, crackers and nuts in the roaster.

In a heavy bottom sauce pan, heat butter and sugar until sugar melts stirring constantly. When the mixture is bubbly remove from heat.  Add garlic powder, salt and soy sauce and stir to mix in.  Add oil mix together but the oil floats on top so whisk.  Pour over cereal mix and toss until everything is coated.

Bake at 275 degrees for 75 minutes. Stir every 15 minutes.  Cool by putting the mix on cookie sheets so they don’t clump up.

The grandkids told me it was a little too sweet so the next time I make it I will reduce the sugar. This is one of those recipes that isn’t an exact science. Thanks for you comment.
