Spring Has Sprung at My House

I just wanted to share some spring and sunshine to all my friends that have had a bitter cold winter.  These are amaryllis and this year they are putting on a real display a long the front of the lanai.

The original bulb for these came from my grandmother.  My uncle gave her a plant when my mother was little in the 1920’s.  It would bloom every spring and she kept it as a house plant because they lived in Pennsylvania.  It multiplied into more bulbs and more pots were filled.  All my aunts had pots of these in their home. This plant was always called Grandma’s Easter Lilly.  I didn’t know they were amaryllis until I had a home of my own.   My mother would keep hers in a window in the dining room  and would put it on display each spring when it came into bloom,  The bulbs kept multiplying and there was more new pots and bigger pots of them.  She gave all her kids some.  I brought mine down to Florida when I moved here in the 80’s.  This is their natural climate and they thrived. I had so many that I planted them out side.   My mother got to see how they would put on a show before she died.  She could not get over how many blossoms my pot would make.  The most that they did was just 2 or 3 up north.

I don’t think these are heirloom and original salmon color.  We let them go to seed each year.  The seed will come right up and it takes about 3 years for them to bloom from seeds.

I hope all of you have a nice St. Patrick’s day.  DSCN0829

These are so gorgeous. I bought a bulb this year and it bloomed beautifully in my Ohio-winter kitchen. I hope I can save the bulb and have some more pretty flowers next year. Yours are spectacular.

  6. How special to have that plant heritage and I love the family name for them! I have a rose which comes from a cutting of a cutting, of one first planted by my grandmother while she was pregnant with my Dad. A lovely reminder of our families, aren’t they.

They are nice orange red. They almost glow in the sun. Many neighbors stop by to look when they are out for walks.
